You mention "the sentience of nature." As you likely know, it's also sort-of expressed as the Gaia concept or "Gaia hypothesis". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaia_hypothesis ... I guess to what extent depends on how we understand "sentience," perhaps a conversation for another day.

Regardless: there's a Spanish farewell, "Go with God" — "Vaya con dios." Years ago I coined an animist version, ¡Vaya con Gaia!"

Sarah, you're the artist, perhaps you could do something with this.

I'd never heard of Suzanne Simard but understood the concept of trees communicating through roots and soil as a community. I googled her and found this TED talk. Recommended. https://www.ted.com/talks/suzanne_simard_how_trees_talk_to_each_other

Love "mushroom consciousness" and "If mushrooms could talk". By coincidence, Fast Company published this yesterday 21 Oct 2021: https://www.fastcompany.com/90688286/this-gleaming-machine-turns-human-poop-into-fertile-soil

"...the Symbiopunk, a bioreactor that transforms feces into humus—the fertile, black substance in soil (not the chickpea dip)... The Symbiopunk is entirely mechanical, requiring no electricity to operate... while also incorporating mycelium (the base organism of a mushroom) into the mix... mushrooms sprout, purifying and breaking down the waste into humus. Human waste becomes organic fertilizer, which you can then incorporate into a garden or farm."

One of the best yet. I have unsubscribed from 100 newsletters, and yours is one of 5 that stay, that I actually read, and that I really appreciate. Cheers!

Naturally, I’ve shared this post more than any other to date because Coach Beard/Suzanne Simard (I was sure I was the only one who caught that line) *and* Sarah L?? All the quadrants of my heart melted together. And, Nathan’s easter egg - transposing poubelle and dorveille was priceless. 💜

I read this newsletter not an hour after I read The Giving Tree to a class of special needs students I’m substitute teaching for today and as I read out loud I could not help but think the tree had feelings and the Boy was neglectful and self-centered until he wasn’t. Then I read this newsletter. We humans as a species are stomping on the feelings of nature until only the stump will be left if we don’t slow down. Glad to be a subscriber.
